Me llamo Rocky

Picacho Camping Numeral Uno

This last weekend we joined Lorie and Steph on a one night trip to Picacho State Park for some good time camping fun.  We have been invited many times in the past, so we were excited to finally find a weekend where we could go.  Lorie and Steph are volunteers who work really hard at keeping this park up, alive, and on the radar for camping, hiking, and river-water fun.

The kids were really excited to go camping, so the four hour drive to get there was no big deal to them.  As soon as we got there, we picked a really cool spot, covered by these beautiful trees, where the kids could climb their little hearts out...

There were alot of problem solving skills in action here.  Eva is a great climber and completely understands her limits, but Enzo just wanted to do what Eva did without thinking about his capabilities.  From the get-go I told Enzo and Eva that they were on their own and any situation they got themselves in to, they would have to get themselves out of.  I told Enzo that I couldn't help him, Eva would have to, and also made sure Eva understood she was responsible for helping Enzo.  I can't believe how well it worked.  I could hear Enzo calling for Eva to help him many times and also see Eva backtrack to get him and talk him through how to get up and down and around all the tree branches.  They made a great tree-climbing team!

Once our site was put together, we took the boat out for a little ride on the river.  (Steph and Eva, below)...

And then it was time to get back to our site to make dinner.  Dana cooked the hot dogs, sausages, and cousin Wayne's extremely scrumptious saurkraut...

Apparently our food smelled really good because we got a few visitors who came to check out the goods.  We were first greeted by a family of Wild burros...

Then later, this big daddy racoon walked up to about 2 feet away from me, trying to get a taste of what we had cooking...

As it got later into the night, Eva tucked herself in for a good night's rest, while Enzo decided he was going to be the last man standing.  He got really creative and transformed himself into a front loader tractor, by using the campers wheel chock to make dirt trails around the fire...

And soon we all began to slowly trickle into bed.

As soon as the sun began to rise, I was awake.  I'm a very light sleeper, so I will wake to any noise, but this was one morning I was really happy to do so.  I could hear all of the wild animals around me communicating to each other and it was so neat.  I could hear the Burros hee-hawing, coyotes howling, raccoons squeaking (or whatever that sound is that they do), ducks, some other type of bird, and also an owl hoo-hooing.  They all made their sounds for quite some time, but it was interesting becausee by the time the sun was fully erect none of the animals were making any more noise.  They were done for the day.

Of course, soon after that the kiddos awoke it was time to get up and moving.  Eva was fully refreshed for she got the most sleep of anyone.  Before Daddy even had a chance to fully wake up, she was ready to climb the mountains...and being the good daddy that he is, he obliged to her commands taking Enzo on his shoulders for the adventure...

Lorie spoiled us all with the most hearty and tasty breakfast, then the kids took advantage of the last flames of the fire with one more s'more...

We spent a majority of the day on the boat and hanging out on the sandbars in the river.  The kids splashed around, the adults (minus myself), enjoyed some tasty beverages, and Lorie, Daddy, and Eva took on a little fishing.  Dana was really happy to finally use his fishing license before it expired...and caught a few fish!  In fact, he even caught 2 fish at one time...that's how good he was!  We let those 2 go, but here is the keeper...

Eva helped Lorie filet the fish and toss the guts and bones.  You never know how a kid that age is going to handle something like that when it is their first time.  Eva loved it.  She thought the whole experience was great!  As Lorie was cutting it open, Eva was dancing around, singing a song she made up that had the words, "I'm going to eat you, Mr. Fish!" Haha.

At the end of the trip, the kids were pronounced Junior Park Rangers and vowed to keep the park in good conditions and respect the surrounding wilderness.  Eva was given a special Junior Park Ranger badge, pinned by the Park Ranger herself!

We left the park that day wanting more camping time.  And, now I'm realizing we didn't get any pictures with our wonderful hosts either.  So, as long as we get another invite, it just means we have to go back soon for more pictures and a longer visit.  We had so much fun.  Thank you, L & S!
