Me llamo Rocky

Family Road Trip 2018 - First Stop

For years, Dana and I had talked about how fun it would be to get a camper and travel the US.  We willed it pretty consistently until this summer when we made our dreams a reality.  Over the past 10 years we have made some great friends, who over time eventually left San Diego and moved to different areas on the west coast.  So, it only made sense for us to pay them all a visit at their new homes from here all the way to Seattle, Washington.

A week after school got out, we filled our camper, packed our bags, and set forth on our journey up the west coast.

Our first destination was Morro Bay, California, where our friends, Emily and Kyle live with their three kids.  It was our first time meeting baby Vera and the first time all of our kids got to play together.  They hit it off immediately!

We camped at a nearby campground where the kids played in the stream ALL. Day. LONG.

Eva, Max, Enzo, and Alice were so excited to catch tadpoles and little frogs, it was almost impossible to get them to think about anything else.

Emily and Kyle were great hosts, excited to show us all the fun things Morro Bay had to offer.  We ate fish and chips at the wharf one night...

Where the kids watched real fishermen bringing fresh crab in, straight from the boat!

Max and Alice brought the kids to their special "secret swing" that hides within hiking trails close to their house...

Then, one day we went out to explore on our own.  We visited the Montana de Oro Beach, which was absolutely beautiful (Yes, it's really that blue!  And, ice cold - Brrrr!)

We then drove out to Morro Rock to get an amazing view of the city and a great family pic!

We had such a wonderful time seeing the sights and getting lots of bonding time with our great friends.  Our families meshed so well together!  In fact, Zander found himself a new girlfriend, also known as "The Tickle Monster", with whom he still can't stop talking about.  And, Enzo shyly fell in love with little Vera.

Saying good-bye wasn't easy, but hoping to reunite our families again soon, made it a little better.

When we left, we had a long, long ride ahead of us, but wanted to catch a couple sights before our next destination.  Our first visit was a drive through the Red Woods.

We got out to stretch our legs and did a mini hike among the red woods.  The trees were so huge and beautiful!

Next, was to see and cross the Golden Gate Bridge (one of Eva's bucklet list items).  As we were approaching the bridge, I recognized a road that sounded familiar.  It was the street our good friend, Felipe lives on, and sure enough, he was just blocks away from where we were.  So, because we had nowhere to pull over with our big truck and trailer, we met him at the nearest gas station for a big hug and a quick hello (which really just made us realize how much we all miss each other).

We carried on with our adventure and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and found a great spot for a family pic!

After this was many hours of driving, before we got to our next destination.....

(stay tuned for Chapter 2)
